Secretary of State - Jocelyn Benson
The Secretary of State "shall issue instructions and promulgate rules ... for the conduct of elections and registrations in accordance with the laws of this state” (MICHIGAN ELECTION LAW [(EXCERPT - Act 116 of 1954)]
8/28/24 - SM24 asked the Secretary of State’s office for their response to the August 7th letter from the RNC threatening suit if rules regarding recounts are implemented this year before the election when the state law authorizing the changes does not become effective until year. A principal concern is that the new law prohibits boards of canvassers from conducting recounts based on allegations of fraud or other election irregularities. THERE WAS NO RESPONSE.
6/28/24 - Michigan’s voter rolls are bloated, according to recent reports: 1) there are 700,000 more registered voters than voting age citizens in Michigan; and 2) 320,000 ghost voter registrations populate the official Michigan voter rolls (relocated out of state, died, were automatically re-registered with a duplicate identification number, etc.). The Secretary of State’s office has defended the bloated rolls by referring to federal and state rules preventing removal from the rolls for lengthy periods of time running out to 2025 and, in some cases, 2027. Questions remain: How does that explain how the rolls got bloated in the first place - were invalid registrations not removed in prior years? How many registrations are you removing this year before the 2024 election? Are there more you should remove this year but will not be doing so? How many were removed for each of the last 10 years? How many should have been removed in each of the last 10 years?
